Choose a sunny site with well-draining soil for your herb garden (6 hours of direct sunlight per day). A modest garden area, balcony, windowsill, or dedicated interior space are all options.
Choose herbs you cook with or are interested in (medicinal, aromatic, etc.). Basil, parsley, mint, rosemary, thyme, chives, oregano, and cilantro are good starting herbs.
Buy herb seeds or starting plants at a nursery or garden center. Planting indoors or on a balcony requires quality potting soil, a watering can or hose, and gardening tools like trowels and gloves.
Check your containers for drainage holes to avoid waterlogging. Add compost to the pots' quality potting soil for nutrients.
Plant each herb according to its directions. Plant seeds at the proper depth and spacing and lightly cover with dirt. Follow the nursery's instructions to transplant seedling plants into containers.
Most herbs prefer somewhat drier soil, so water them periodically without overwatering. Keep soil wet but not saturated. Water herbs according to their demands.
Place your herb garden in the sun. Indoor plants need sunlight on all sides, so rotate containers occasionally.
To promote growth and health, trim or harvest herbs regularly. Avoid harvesting more than one-third of the plant to allow regeneration.
